Aspen Tree - Characteristics

  • Large tree
  • Outshoots, known as suckers spring up around tree
  • Foliage: Silvery green, mostly rounded leaves with pointed tip
  • Foliage turns yellow in Autumn
  • Light canopy rustles in light breeze creating Aspens distinctive sound
  • Mature size: 12m tall & 8m wide
    • If allowed to grow to full maturity
  • Flower: Male trees produce woolly catkins in Spring before it's foliage
  • Deciduous tree, they lose their leaves in Winter
  • Growth rate: Fast
  • Very hardy tree

Aspen Tree - Uses

  • Good screening trees
  • Fast growing & large, ideal for blocking views
  • Suitable for larger gardens & wildlife gardens
  • Excellent choice for wet areas
  • Plants have good leaf retention also adding to it's benefits as a screening tree
  • Trees can be grown in exposed areas, but avoid coastal sites

Aspen Tree - Planting Instructions

Planting Time

  • Plant the moment they arrive
  • Bare root trees can only be planted in the dormant season
  • Avoid frosty conditions, where the ground is frozen
  • These Aspen saplings are 3ft tall & will require several years to mature

Positioning Trees

  • Aspens like full sun, not happy in shade
  • Ideal soil would be fertile & rich in humus
  • Happy in acidic or neutral to alkaline soils
  • Aspens like well drained, moist, wet & waterlogged soils
  • Spacing distance varies on use
  • If planting in lawns, then space 6 to 12m apart
  • When planting, hold plants at ground level & back fill the top soil
  • Ensure each plant is straight & soil is compacted in around it's root ball
  • Level off the soil around the plants
  • Support with bamboo cane for first 2 years
  • Replace cane with larger stake when required

After Care

  • Regularly cut away suckers to prevent tree from taking over
  • Water bare roots plants regularly until plants establish
  • Water before & after planting
  • If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
  • Weeding is also essential, especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young tree
  • Keep grass growth away from the base of trees to ensure a faster growth rate
  • Avoid strimming around the base of trees

Populus Tremula - Quick Facts

  • The common Aspen was an early coloniser. Meaning it was one of the first trees to populate northern Europe with the retreat of the ice age
  • While aspen is a native of Ireland, it is not commonly found
  • Aspens generally grow on wet lands
  • Aspen has 90 dependent insect species which rely on the tree to live & feed
  • It was said that the cross carried by Jesus was made from Aspen, which would be difficult as Aspen trees are not suited to the arid climate conditions of Jerusalem

    • Once submitted, a plan cannot be changed

Glas Scheme - Planting a Grove of Native Trees

  • Planting Requirements
    • You can plant Alder, Silver Birch, Sessile Oak, Pedunculate Oak, Mountain Ash, Bird Cherry, Hazel, Scots Pine, Goat Willow
    • Minimum of 500m2 with 250 plants
    • Maximum of 900m2 with 450 plants
    • Plants must be a minimum of 40cm in height at time of planting
    • Spacing: Plant trees 2m apart in rows 1m apart
    • Grove needs to be protected from livestock. fencing off area will be necessary
    • Dead plants must be replaced
    • Weeds must be controlled
    • Plants must be purchased from a registered grower or supplier (Including ourselves)
  • Rates of Payment:
    • €0.90 per plant per year for 5 years
    • We can supply your EC plant passport when you order your hedging from us
    • Keep this passport reference number for your reps
