Cyclamen Corms - Description

Cyclamen Corms - How to Sow

  • Cyclamens are hardy plants & will grow in cold conditions & shade
  • Sow individual corms approx 1" or 2" (2.5-5cm) deep
  • Grow in free draining soil
  • Soak for 24hours before planting
  • Prepare soil by adding leaf mould or farm yard manure to soil prior to sowing
  • Plant in compost with pointed end facing up
  • Water after sowing

Corms & Tubers

  • Bulbs, corms, rhizomes & tubers are all essentially the same thing
  • They are all underground storage devices
  • Corms
    • These are modified stems (that store food) with a basal plate
    • They have a pointed top which can have one or more growing points
    • Examples of corms include Crocus, Gladioli & Freesia
  • Tuber
    • These are underground storage stems with crowns (eyes)
    • New shoots emerge from the crowns
    • They have no basal plate & no tunic
    • Tubers include potatoes, dahlias, anemones & daylillies
  • Bulbs
    • Bulbs are made up of scale - which eventually become the foliage & flowers
    • The scales are modified stems that store food
    • They have a dry outer layer - tunic
    • Bulbs are Onions, Lilles, Tulips, Hyacinths & Snowdrops
  • Rhizomes
    • These are underground stems, that grow horizontally
    • Buds develop along these stems that give rise to new shoots
    • Examples include Iris, Cannas, Lily of the Valley

  • It's always best to order well in advance to avoid disappointment
