Portuguese Laurel Plants - Characteristics

Portuguese Laurel Plants - Planting Instructions

Planting Time

• Bare root Portuguese Laurel should be planted during the dormant season from October to March.
• Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or during severe frosty conditions.

Positioning Plants

• For hedging, space plants approximately 30–40cm apart.
• Plant approximately 3 plants per metre for a strong and dense hedge.
• Staggering plants in a double row can be used where a wider and denser hedge is required.
• Position each plant at approximately the same depth as it was previously growing.
• Backfill with suitable topsoil and firm the soil carefully around the roots.
• Water thoroughly after planting.

Handling the Plants

• Plant bare root plants as soon as possible after delivery.
• If planting is delayed, temporarily heel the plants into suitable soil.
• Keep the roots protected in their packaging and away from direct sunlight.
• Take care not to damage the roots during handling and planting.

After Care

• Water regularly until the plants are fully established.
• Water thoroughly after planting.
• During prolonged dry weather, water approximately every 2 days.
• Keep the planting area free from competing weeds.
• Weed membrane and mulch can be used to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
• Once established, Portuguese Laurel is relatively low maintenance apart from regular trimming.

Pruning

• Trim regularly to maintain the desired height and shape of the hedge.
• Regular pruning encourages dense branching and helps maintain a neat formal appearance.
• Established plants tolerate harder pruning when required.
• Avoid excessive pruning during periods of very hot or dry weather.
