Potted Betula Tree - Characteristics

  • Tall, upright Birch Tree

  • Canopy: Light & open
  • Bark: Turns white as tree matures
  • Base of truck becomes black & rugged at base
  • Leaves: Deeply incised
  • Flowers: Brown catkins
  • Mature size: 6m tall & 6m wide

  • Commonly grown in estates and on lawns

Potted Betula Tree - Planting Instructions

Planting Time

  • These potted plants can be planted any time of year
  • Best to avoid frosty conditions, where the ground is frozen

Positioning Trees

  • Birch likes full sun, part shade & shade
  • Soil can be well drained, light or heavy clay
  • Not suited to damp soils - For this we recommend the Downy Birch
  • Happy in acidic or neutral to alkaline soils
  • Spacing distance varies on use
  • If planting in lawns, then space 5 to 7m apart
  • When planting, dig a planting hole twice the width of the tree's root ball
  • Ensure each plant is straight & soil is compacted in around it's root ball
  • Level off the soil around the plants

After Care

  • Water before & after planting
  • If dry weather persists, water every 2 days in the first year
  • Weeding is also essential - especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young tree
  • Keep grass growth away from the base of trees to ensure a faster growth rate
  • Avoid strimming around the base of trees
