Where to Plant

Plant hyacinths in a sunny or lightly shaded position with fertile, well-drained soil. They are particularly effective when planted in groups in borders or raised beds, where their colourful flower spikes and fragrance can be appreciated.

Hyacinths are also excellent for containers. Plant them in pots near entrances, patios or seating areas to enjoy their fragrance when they come into flower.

How to Plant

Plant hyacinth bulbs during autumn, before the ground becomes too cold. Choose a well-drained location and plant the bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards. As a general guide, bulbs should be planted at around two to three times their own height and spaced approximately 10 to 15cm apart.

For containers, use a good-quality multipurpose or bulb compost and ensure the container has adequate drainage. Avoid allowing the compost to remain waterlogged.

Growing and Care

Water bulbs after planting if the soil is dry and allow natural rainfall to provide moisture during the winter. Once growth appears in spring, water during prolonged dry periods, particularly when grown in containers.

After flowering, allow the foliage to remain in place until it has naturally yellowed and died back. The leaves help the bulb store energy for the following year's growth. Remove spent flower heads if desired, but avoid cutting back the foliage while it is still green.

Planting Ideas

Use these mixed-colour hyacinths to create strong blocks of spring colour in borders or combine them with other spring bulbs such as daffodils, tulips and muscari. They also make attractive additions to pots and containers where their fragrance can be enjoyed close to the home.
