Birch Tree - Characteristics

• Tall, narrow trees
• Light, open canopy
• Mature size: 25m tall & 8m wide
  • If allowed to grow to full maturity
  • Can be maintained at smaller size either
• As tree mature branches take on an arching habit
• Deciduous tree, they loose their leaves in Winter
• Foliage - Ovate, serrated margins, green in Summer turning yellow in Autumn
• Moderate growth rate
• Very hardy tree

Birch Tree - Uses

• Grown for their interesting bark, as tree ages they develop a white stem
• Commonly grown in estates and on lawns
• Offers a beautiful focal point in any garden
• Offer height & privacy while it's light open canopy will not block out too much sunlight
• Excellent, reliable garden tree

Birch Tree - Planting Instructions

Planting Time

• Plant the moment they arrive
• Bare root trees can only be planted in the dormant season
• Avoid frosty conditions, where the ground is frozen
• These birch saplings are 3ft tall & will require several years to mature

Positioning Trees

• Birch likes full sun, part shade & shade
• Soil can be well drained, light or heavy clay
• Not suited to damp soils - For this we recommend the Downy Birch
• Happy in acidic or neutral to alkaline soils
• Spacing distance varies on use
• If planting in lawns, then space 5 to 7m apart
• When planting, hold plants at ground level & back fill the top soil
• Ensure each plant is straight & soil is compacted in around it's root ball
• Level off the soil around the plants
• Support with bamboo cane for first 2 years
• Replace cane with larger stake when required

After Care

• Water bare roots plants regularly until plants establish
• Water before & after planting
• If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
• Weeding is also essential - especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young tree
• Keep grass growth away from the base of trees to ensure a faster growth rate
• Avoid strimming around the base of trees

  • Once submitted, a plan cannot be changed

Glas Scheme - Planting a Grove of Native Trees

• Planting Requirements
  • You can plant Alder, Silver Birch, Sessile Oak, Pedunculate Oak, Mountain Ash, Bird Cherry, Hazel, Scots Pine, Goat Willow
  • Minimum of 500m² with 250 plants
  • Maximum of 900m² with 450 plants
  • Plants must be a minimum of 40cm in height at time of planting
  • Spacing: Plant trees 2m apart in rows 1m apart
  • Grove needs to be protected from livestock. fencing off area will be necessary
  • Dead plants must be replaced
  • Weeds must be controlled
  • Plants must be purchased from a registered grower or supplier (Including ourselves)

  • €0.90 per plant per year for 5 years
  • We can supply your EC plant passport when you order your hedging from us
