- Hyacinthoides non-scripta, commonly known as the Native Irish or English Bluebell, produces graceful arching stems covered with fragrant, bell-shaped violet-blue flowers. One of the most iconic woodland flowers of spring, it creates spectacular carpets of colour beneath trees and shrubs while providing an important early nectar source for pollinators.

Bluebell Bulbs - How to Sow

- Choose a partially shaded or lightly shaded planting location.
- To prepare planting hole:
- Use a garden hand trowel, dibber or bulb planter.
- Depth: Approximately 8cm - 10cm deep.
- Spacing: 8cm - 10cm apart.
- Soil: Moist, fertile, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Improve poor soils with compost or leaf mould before planting.
- Plant bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.
- Cover with soil and firm gently.
- Water after planting if conditions are dry.
- Feed with poultry manure or a balanced fertiliser once foliage appears.
- Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulbs store energy for the following season.
- Leave bulbs undisturbed to naturalise and create increasingly impressive displays each spring.
