Chard Seeds - Description

Chard Seeds - Sowing Instructions

  • Sowing Time: Mid Spring through Summer
  • Sowing Location: Start under protection
  • Can plant or sow directly outside in late Spring
  • Space plants 30cm apart or thin later
  • Harvest: Most the year - once plants have reached 10cm in height
  • Preferred soil: Will do well in average garden soil
  • Prefers pH below 6.5
  • Requires regular weeding
  • Protect against slugs, caterpillars & snails
  • Can be harvested for individual leaves or by lifting the entire plant

Sowing Instructions

  • Sowing Time: Sow indoors under cover in mid Spring
  • Can be sown in late Summer for Winter greens
  • Sowing Location: Indoors, thin & then transplant out later
  • Sow in 24 cell seed trays, 3 to 5 seeds per tray, thin later
  • Can be sown directly outside in late Spring
  • Sowing Depth: 1 inch (2.5cm)
  • Using potting compost, soak compost & then sow seeds
  • Cover lightly with compost
  • Position in a bright, frost free location
  • Keep moist

How to Transplant

  • Thin 2 weeks after germination to one seedling per cell
  • Once large enough to handle you can transplant out into the garden
  • Harden off your seedlings first. Place out during the day for a week before planting out
  • Space 30cm apart
  • Soil: A fertile soil which is high in nitrogen is best

Crop Maintenance

  • Chard benefits from a nitrogen rich soil, add fertiliser before transplanting out
  • Thining out: Thin to 30cm between plants
  • Keep weeded & moist at all times
  • If growing for Winter greens, cover rows of crops with cloche, mini tunnel or fleece tunnel
  • Protect seedlings from slugs

How to Harvest

  • Can be grown as a cut & come again crop
  • Harvest once foliage is 10cm tall
  • Cut away leaves at base
  • Give plants time to recover
  • Can be harvested again

  • Delivery is to kerbside only
  • If road access to your site is tight, then please advise us before purchasing

  • Also, we cannot guarantee delivery on a specific day (Please allow 1-3 days for delivery)
  • It's always best to order well in advance to avoid disappointment
  • Cancellation of pallets when items are already in transit will incur a 40 euro per pallet cancellation fee (To cover return delivery costs)
