Clematis Climbing Plants - Planting Instructions

Sowing Time

  • Do not plant in frosty conditions

Hole Preparation

  • Clematis likes it's roots to be positioned in shade
  • Dig a deep planting hole for clematis & all climbers, ideally 1½ft deep
  • Roots of climbers need space to grow
  • These plants are not suited to containers or limited root zone space
  • Plant approx. 2" deep to encourage new shoots to develop from ground level
  • Mix in well rotted manure
  • Also mix in a small handful of fertiliser

Handling the Plants

  • Take care not to damage plant's roots
  • Water plants before & after planting
  • Feed plants over the Summer months
  • Use a fertiliser high in phosphorus & potassium
  • Mulch up around the base of plants after planting
  • Provide a climbing support for clematis when young
  • A trellis or wire frame would work fine

Pruning Clematis

  • Montana is in pruning group 1
    • Clematis Pruning Groups
      • Group 1 – These plants only flower on previous years wood
        • Prune after Spring flowering
      • Group 2 – These climbers flower on both old & new wood
        • Little pruning is required - Light prune in late Autumn / Spring
        • Plants can be rejuvenated by cutting down to ground level
      • Group 3 – Clematis that flowers on current season stem only
        • Can be cut to the ground in Autumn or Spring

Good quality plant
Bought this as a potted root early in the spring and despite the awful weather it's got dozens of buds and as many flowers already. Looking forward to next year!
