Sowing Time
- Potted plants are suited to planting all year round
- Do not plant in frosty conditions
Hole Preparation
- Clematis likes it's roots to be positioned in shade
- Dig a deep planting hole for clematis & all climbers, ideally 1½ft deep
- Roots of climbers need space to grow
- These plants are not suited to containers or limited root zone space
- Mix in well rotted manure
- Also mix in a small handful of fertiliser
Handling the Plants
- Take care not to damage plant's roots
- Water plants before & after planting
- Feed plants over the Summer months
- Use a fertiliser high in phosphorus & potassium
- Mulch up around the base of plants after planting
- Support with a trellis or wire frame
Pruning Clematis

- Group 1 – These plants only flower on previous years wood
- Prune after Spring flowering
- Group 2 – These climbers flower on both old & new wood
- Little pruning is required - Light prune in late Autumn / Spring
- Plants can be rejuvenated by cutting down to ground level

- Can be cut to the ground in Autumn or Spring
