Compost Aerator - How to Use

  • Compost aerator should be used once every week
  • Use it after adding additional material to your compost heap
  • Use by pushing the pointed end into compost bin or pile
  • Push in as far as you can & then pull it back out
  • The folding arms will open out & pull back the compost from the centre of the pile
  • This will create air pockets in the compost
  • Continue to do this at spacings of 30cm throughout the compost pile

Compost Aerator - Why Use

  • Compost piles will only decompose & break down once air, water & heat is available
  • Micro organisms such as bacteria work harder & faster in the presence of oxygen
  • If pile is not aerated, the layers sit on top of each other & air is lost
  • This leads to anaerobic conditions and a slow to decompose, smelly compost heap
  • By aerating, we can create aerobic conditions which encourages good bacteria
  • These bacteria break down compost fast & create better quality compost
  • By aerating we can double the rate of decomposition

Purchased the Darlac compost aerator for my newly built compost bay which has the 4 wooden sides and is deep enough so there’s no way I would be able to poke and prod with a fork to loosen material. Firstly, the time for receiving the aerator took less that 5 days which is great. The t-bar must be attached when received but you get butterfly nuts which are fab and easy to tighten when needed. And it’s in my favourite colour red which means you can spot it straight away. Now for the main part, does it work? Does it what, it’s fab, use your weight to push it into material and the t-bar makes it easy to manoeuvre it back out with the aid of rubber handles, soft under the hands. I’ll have fantastic compost in no time
Excellent tool looking forward to seeing the results. Superb service, prompt and efficient with great communication.
Arrived promptly, well packaged (possibly too much packaging?) and in good order.
I have tried it out with standard plastic "dalek-type" compost bin and with 2 larger pallet-built bins. Can require a bit of force to insert all the way down to the bottom of the bin and more so to draw it back up.
It looks like the aerator is doing the job it was designed for. Over all I am very happy it.
This is a great gadget for aerating your compost and so easy to use. Well worth the money.
Thank you for the good quality, price and service.
Exactly what I've been looking for.
