Positioning Fig Trees
- Fig trees are happy in most soils
- Mediterranean plants, so prefer good drainage & low fertility
- Best to grow in full sun, at least 6 hours of sun each day
- To ensure a good harvest, grow in greenhouses
- Temperatures should not drop below 10°C
- You can also grow them in pots & move outside in Summer
- Provide good drainage
- Avoid shaded, exposed areas & frost pockets
- South east facing slope is best
After Care
- Water plants when they arrive
- Water again after planting
- Feed in Spring & throughout the Summer months
- If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
- Prune back fruiting stems to reduce numbers in April
- Best to wear gloves as the sap can irrigate skin
- In Autumn pick off unwanted fruits to focus attention on ripening older fruit
Harvest
- Can produce 2 harvests each year
- The first in Spring on the previous year's growth
- The second in late Summer on current season's growth
Pollination
- Note: if you keep your fig tree indoors at all times then it will require pollination
- This is due to lack of insects or bees indoors
- You can pollinate by brushing the flowers with a light paint brush
- This will spread the pollen from flower to flower
