Hydrangea Climbing Plants - Planting Instructions

Sowing Time

  • These potted plants are suited to planting all year round
  • Do not plant in frosty conditions

Hole Preparation

  • When planting, dig a deep planting hole, ideally 1½ft deep
  • Plant approx. 2" deep to encourage new shoots to develop from ground level
  • Ensure roots have plenty of space & soil to grow
  • These plants are not suited to containers or limited root zone space
  • To ensure a fast establishing plant, add in manure to the base of the planting hole
  • Also mix in a small handful of fertiliser

Handling the Plants

  • Always handle plants with care
  • Climbers can be delicate
  • Water plants before & after planting
  • Feed plants over the Summer months
  • Use a fertiliser high in phosphorus & potassium
  • Mulch up around the base of plants after planting
  • Don't let plants dry out

Pruning Hydrangea

  • This Hydrangea flowers on previous years growth
  • Prune in late Autumn - Early Spring
  • But when pruning, don't remove too much of the plant
  • If you over-prune, you will cut into previous seasons growth & reduce flowering

Types of Hydrangea

  • Mophead: Macrophylla. Large spherical blooms
  • Lacecap: Also Macrophylla. Small flowers, with large bud centers
  • Smooth: Arborescens. Usually white blooms, spherical
  • Mountain: Macrophylla subulata
  • Panicle: Paniculata. Large, pointed or cone shaped blooms
  • Oak leaf: Quercifolia. Oak shaped leaves, good Autumn colour
  • Climbing: Petiolaris

This arrived very well protected in the box. Service excellent, ordered on a Saturday and came on Tuesday afternoon. A nice and hardy plant, 2 foot in height so well established. I have been looking for a climbing Hydrangea for some time, I'm hoping it will stay white, but who knows with the soil in my garden.
Great size looks great!
Vigorous climber.

Note: We don't ship plants on Fridays due to the extended period they would remain without light & water
