Iris Bulbs - How to Grow
- See our blog on how to sow and care for bulbs.
- Choose a sunny, sheltered planting location.
- To prepare planting hole:
- Use a garden hand trowel, dibber or bulb planter.
- Depth: Approximately 8cm - 10cm deep.
- Spacing: 8cm - 10cm apart.
- Soil: Fertile, light and well-drained soil. Improve heavy clay soils with horticultural grit or sand to prevent waterlogging.
- Plant bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.
- Cover with soil and firm gently.
- Water after planting if conditions are dry.
- Feed with a balanced bulb fertiliser or poultry manure as new growth appears.
- Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to replenish the bulbs for the following season.
- Leave bulbs in the ground to establish and produce reliable annual displays.
