Kiwi Plants - Planting Instructions

Planting Time

  • Plant as soon as possible

Positioning Kiwi Trees

  • Kiwi like most soils
  • But require a sheltered spot
  • Mediterranean plants, so prefer good drainage & low fertility
  • Best to grow in full sun, at least 6 hours of sun each day
  • To ensure a good harvest, grow in greenhouses
  • Temperatures should not drop below 10°C
  • You can also grow them in pots & move outside in Summer
  • Provide good drainage
  • Avoid shaded, exposed areas & frost pockets
  • South east facing slope is best

After Care

  • Water plants when they arrive
  • Water again after planting
  • Feed in Spring & throughout the Summer months
  • If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
  • Prune back fruiting stems to reduce numbers in April
  • Best to wear gloves as the sap can irrigate skin
  • In Autumn pick off unwanted fruits to focus attention on ripening older fruit

Harvest

  • Can produce 2 harvests each year
  • The first in Spring on the previous year's growth
  • The second in late Summer on current season's growth

Pollination

  • Note: if you keep your fig tree indoors at all times then it will require pollination
  • This is due to lack of insects or bees indoors
  • You can pollinate by brushing the flowers with a light paint brush
  • This will spread the pollen from flower to flower
