Narcissus Petit Four Daffodil Bulbs

Narcissus 'Petit Four' is an elegant double-flowered daffodil that produces beautifully formed blooms in soft creamy white with a warm yellow-orange centre. The layered flowers provide excellent visual interest in the spring garden and make this variety a lovely choice for borders, containers and cottage-style planting schemes.

Petit Four is particularly effective when planted in groups, where the distinctive double flowers can create a fuller and more impressive seasonal display. As a hardy perennial bulb, it can return year after year when planted in suitable conditions and allowed to complete its natural growth cycle.

Where to Plant Narcissus Petit Four

Plant Narcissus 'Petit Four' in a sunny or partially shaded position with reasonably well-drained soil. Daffodils are adaptable and reliable garden bulbs, making them suitable for a wide range of planting situations.

They are particularly attractive planted in groups towards the front or middle of borders, where the double flowers can be enjoyed during spring. They can also be planted beneath deciduous trees and shrubs or incorporated into informal and cottage-style planting schemes.

Petit Four is also suitable for growing in containers. Plant several bulbs together in a pot or container for a concentrated display of spring flowers near patios, entrances and seating areas.

How to Plant Narcissus Petit Four Bulbs

  • Planting Time: Autumn
  • Choose a sunny or partially shaded position with good drainage.
  • Prepare the planting area by removing weeds and loosening the soil.
  • Plant the bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.
  • Plant bulbs at approximately two to three times their own depth.
  • Space bulbs approximately 10–15cm apart, allowing room for them to develop.
  • Cover with soil and water thoroughly after planting.
  • Allow the foliage to develop naturally in spring.

Growing and Care

Narcissus 'Petit Four' is relatively easy to grow and requires little maintenance once established. Water newly planted bulbs after planting and provide additional water during prolonged dry periods when plants are actively growing.

Good drainage is important, particularly during the dormant period. Avoid planting bulbs in areas where water regularly collects or where the soil remains saturated for long periods.

Once the flowers have finished, allow the foliage to remain in place until it has naturally yellowed and died back. The leaves are essential for replenishing the bulb's energy reserves and should not be cut while they are still green.

Spent flowers can be removed after flowering if desired. This prevents energy being directed towards seed production while allowing the foliage to continue feeding the bulb.

Planting Narcissus Petit Four in Groups

For the strongest visual impact, plant Petit Four bulbs in groups or informal drifts rather than individually. The creamy white flowers and warm yellow-orange centres create an attractive contrast with surrounding green foliage and other spring flowers.

They can be combined with other spring bulbs and early-flowering perennials to create a succession of colour throughout the garden. Their double flowers are particularly effective in cottage gardens and mixed perennial borders.

Growing in Containers

Narcissus 'Petit Four' can be grown successfully in containers using a good quality, free-draining compost. Ensure the container has adequate drainage holes and avoid allowing excess water to remain around the bulbs.

Container-grown daffodils are ideal for adding seasonal colour to patios, balconies, entrances and terraces. Planting several bulbs together will create a fuller spring display.
