Oak Tree - Characteristics
- The mature Oak forms a large wide domed tree
- Broad & wide dome canopy develops as Oak matures
- Bark: Distinctive bark with deep furrows
- Foliage: Ovate in shape with deep rounded lobes
- Foliage turns brown / red in Autumn
- Acorns: Seed of the Oak. Main food source for squirrels
- Fall from trees in Autumn
- Mature size: 30m tall & 15m wide
- Deciduous tree, they lose their leaves in Winter
- Growth rate: Slow
- Very hardy tree

- Requires space to grow
- Excellent specimen tree
- Only suited to very large gardens, parks & wildlife areas
Oak Tree - Planting Instructions
Planting Time
- Ideally, plant as soon as arrive
- Bare root trees can only be planted during the dormant season (September to April)
- Avoid frosty conditions, where the ground is frozen
- These Oak saplings are 4ft tall & will require several years to mature
Positioning Trees
- Position in sun or partial shade
- Soil: Likes good, fertile soil with good drainage
- Most commonly found on alkaline soils
- Spacing distance varies on use
- Ensure oak is planted at least 20m from any building
- When planting, hold plants at ground level & back fill the top soil
- Ensure each plant is straight & soil is compacted in around it's root ball
- Level off the soil around the plants
- Support with bamboo cane for first 2 years
- Replace cane with larger stake when required
After Care
- Water bare roots plants regularly until plants establish
- Water before & after planting
- If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
- Weeding is also essential, especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young tree
- Keep grass growth away from the base of trees to ensure a faster growth rate
- Avoid strimming around the base of trees

- If there is a Priority Environmental Asset (PEA) on the land, it must be chosen before any other action can be taken
- There are deadline dates to have actions completed by
- Once submitted, a plan cannot be changed
Glas Scheme - Planting a Grove of Native Trees
- Planting Requirements
- You can plant Alder, Silver Birch, Sessile Oak, Pedunculate Oak, Mountain Ash, Bird Cherry, Hazel, Scots Pine, Goat Willow
- Minimum of 500m2 with 250 plants
- Maximum of 900m2 with 450 plants
- Plants must be a minimum of 40cm in height at time of planting
- Spacing: Plant trees 2m apart in rows 1m apart
- Grove needs to be protected from livestock. fencing off area will be necessary
- Dead plants must be replaced
- Weeds must be controlled
- Plants must be purchased from a registered grower or supplier (Including ourselves)

- €0.90 per plant per year for 5 years
