Potted Apple Tree - Planting Instructions

Planting Time

  • Plant as soon as the plants arrive
  • Plant in dormant season (October to March)
  • Avoid freezing conditions, where the ground is frozen

Positioning Trees

  • Plant in full sun
  • Avoid shaded, exposed areas & frost pockets
  • South east facing slope is most ideal - avoid north facing slopes
  • Add well rotted manure to planting hole
  • When planting - spread out roots, ensure the top of the root collar is just at or below ground level
  • Compact soil in around the rootball

Orchard Planting

  • Plan your orchard along a north - south axis
  • This avoids shading & maximises sunlight to plants
  • Rootstock will determine spacing (M9 rootstock = 2.5m - 3m apart)
  • Stake trees prior to planting

After Care

  • Water before & after planting
  • If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
  • Weeding is also essential - especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young tree
  • After 2 years, check the tree stakes to ensure they are not too tight around the tree
It is a bit early to say how the fruits are going to be, but the tree has settled well and starts burgeoning. Now we just have to wait.
