  • Current Plant Size: 80 - 100cm (Approx. 3 - 4 Feet)
  • Note: White Bark Develops as Tree Matures

Potted Birch Tree - Characteristics

  • Tall, narrow trees
  • Light, open canopy
  • Mature size: 25m tall & 8m wide
    • If allowed to grow to full maturity
    • Can be maintained at smaller size either
  • As tree matures, branches take on an arching habit
  • Deciduous tree, they loose their leaves in Winter
  • Foliage - Ovate, serrated margins, green in Summer turning yellow in Autumn
  • Fast growth rate
  • Very hardy tree

  • Grown for their interesting bark, as tree ages they develop a white stem
  • Commonly grown in estates and on lawns
  • Offers a beautiful focal point in any garden
  • Offer height & privacy while it's light open canopy will not block out too much sunlight

Potted Birch Tree - Planting Instructions

Planting Time

  • These potted plants can be planted any time of year
  • Best to avoid frosty conditions, where the ground is frozen

Positioning Trees

  • Birch likes full sun, part shade & shade
  • Soil can be well drained, light or heavy clay
  • Not suited to damp soils - For this we recommend the Downy Birch
  • Happy in acidic or neutral to alkaline soils
  • Spacing distance varies on use
  • If planting in lawns, then space 5 to 7m apart
  • When planting, dig a planting hole twice the width of the tree's root ball
  • Ensure each plant is straight & soil is compacted in around it's root ball
  • Level off the soil around the plants

After Care

  • Water before & after planting
  • If dry weather persists, water every 2 days in the first year
  • Weeding is also essential - especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young tree
  • Keep grass growth away from the base of trees to ensure a faster growth rate
  • Avoid strimming around the base of trees

  • The Birch develops flowers called catkins in Summer
  • Birch are extremely hardy trees
  • They are the most northerly deciduous tree, even growing in Siberia
  • Birch wood makes good firewood
  • The sap of Birch is used in drinks in Russia and makes a sweet syrup for desserts
  • Birch is found throughout Ireland & is important in the balance of our ecosystem
