- Plant in full sun to partial shade; in hot spots, provide some shade to avoid wilting
- Thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil
- Plant in a hole twice the width of the rootball, enrich with organic matter, then water well and mulch—but keep mulch away from the stem
- Regular watering during dry spells is essential
- Prune hard in late winter or early spring to within a few buds of permanent framework to encourage strong flowering
