Red Onion Plug Plants - How to Grow
- Sow seedlings directly outside from March
- Spacing: 20cm
- Rows: 30cm apart
- Water before planting
- Soak plug plants for 10 minutes before planting
- Handle plants with care when removing from trays
- If more than 1 seedling per plug, very carefully separate them before planting
- Use a dibber to make a small planting hole
- Drop seedling's roots into hole & firm in well
- Site: Full sun
- Soil: Deep, rich soils from of weeds & stones
- Ideally prepare your soil in Autumn
- Ideal pH between 6.5 to 7.5. Add lime if soil is too acidic
Red Onion Plug Plants - Care & Harvest
- Harvest from July to September
- Harvest when foliage dies back & bulbs rise above soil level
- 1 week before harvesting, slight lift onions using a garden fork
- After harvest, lay onions out in the sun to dry outer skin
- Keep rows weeded in early months
