Potted Penstemon Plant - Characteristics

  • Medium height herbaceous perennial
  • Flower colour: Deep red petals
  • Flowers approx. 3.5cm in width
  • Tubular, drooping blooms appear along tall flowering stems
  • A blast of colour all Summer long
  • Flowering from June to October
  • Dies back in Winter but comes back every Spring
  • Habit: Clump forming with upright flowering stems

Potted Penstemon Plant - Planting Instructions

  • Penstemons prefer good fertile soils
  • Ideal in well drained, but moist soils
  • To encourage strong growth, add farmyard manure & compost the base of the planting hole
  • Before planting, soak pot for about 3 minutes before planting
  • Dig hole roughly twice the size of the plant pot
  • Handle pots with care
  • Carefully squeeze side of pots to remove plant
  • Position plant in the ground so that the top of root ball is level with existing soil level
  • Firm in well
  • Soak soil well after planting
  • Little maintenance required after that point
  • To encourage blooms, deadhead as required
  • Benefits from addition of a phosphorus based fertiliser
