Rosa Flaming Star - Planting Instructions
Sowing Time
- Potted rose plants can be planted any time of year, provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
- Do not plant in frosty conditions.
Hole Preparation
- Dig a generous planting hole, approximately 1½ x 1½ ft.
- Mix in well-rotted manure or good quality organic compost to improve soil structure and fertility.
- Also, incorporate a small handful of balanced rose fertiliser into the soil.
Handling the Plants
- Take care not to damage plant's roots.
- Ideally, soak the plant pot for about 10-15 minutes before planting to ensure the roots are well-hydrated.
- Place the rose in the centre of the hole, ensuring the graft union (the swollen part where the stems meet the roots) is just below soil level.
- Backfill with the prepared soil, gently firming around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting to settle the soil.
- Feed plants over the summer months with a fertiliser high in potassium to promote flowering.
- Apply rose clear or a suitable fungicide to foliage preventatively to deter mildew, rust, and aphids.
Pruning Roses
- Rose plants require annual pruning to maintain health and encourage vigorous flowering.
- Prune in late winter to early spring, once the worst of the frost has passed.
- Cut out all dead, dying, or diseased branches.
- Remove any stems that are crossing over or rubbing against each other.
- Prune back remaining healthy stems to approximately 30cm (12 inches) above ground level, cutting to an outward-facing bud.
