Planting Time
- Can be planted throughout the year when the soil is workable and not frozen or waterlogged.
- Choose a sunny or partially shaded position with acidic, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
- Use ericaceous compost when planting in a container or where the existing soil is not sufficiently acidic.
- Water thoroughly after planting to help the plant establish.
After Care
- Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during flowering and fruit development, but avoid waterlogging.
- Rainwater is preferable where possible as blueberries perform best with low-lime water.
- Feed in spring with a suitable fertiliser for acid-loving plants.
- Protect developing fruit from birds if necessary.
- Prune in late winter by removing some of the oldest or unproductive wood to encourage new fruiting growth.
- Maintain acidic soil conditions by topping up with ericaceous compost when required.
- Container-grown plants should be watered regularly as they can dry out more quickly.
