Whitecurrant Canes - Planting Instructions
Planting Time
- Plant your canes as soon as they arrive
- Potted plants can be sown all year long
- Avoid frosty conditions, where the ground is frozen
Positioning Redcurrant Canes
- Spacing: 150cm apart in rows 180cm apart
- Whitecurrant plants can be grown in full sun or part shade
- Full sun gives sweeter tasting fruits
- Soil type: Neutral to slightly acidic soils
- Can be grown in containers
- Choose a sheltered spot
- Fill planting hole with manure prior to planting
- When planting, hold plants at ground level & back fill the top soil
- Ensure each plant is straight & soil is compacted in around it's root ball
- Level off the soil around the plants
- To harvest, cut away entire bunches of fruit as they turn white
After Care
- Water before & after planting
- If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
- Feed plants in late Winter after pruning
- Weeding is also essential
- Mulch up around the base of plants after weeding
Cutting Back
- Fruit grows on old stems
- Therefore you shouldn't remove all stems when pruning
- Just remove any unhealthy stems & very old stems
- Prune back remaining shoots by 1/3 to outward facing buds
- This can be done in Winter
