  • This plant is naturalised in Ireland - Common in Irish hedgerows
  • Mature size: 2m tall by 1.2m spread
  • Deciduous shrub, they loose their leaves in Winter
  • Foliage - Pinnate with 5 to 7 leaflets - corrugated or 'rough'
  • Vigorous growth rate growing up to 2ft each year
  • Flower - Attractive pink flowers appear in early Summer & last until Autumn
    • Flower is small & cup shaped with 5 to 7 wrinkled petals
  • Fruits - Hips develop on plants after flowering
    • This however can be avoided by deadheading
  • A hardy plant which is able for cold Winters & hard frosts

Wild Rose - Uses

  • These fast growing & thorny shrubs are great as boundary plants
  • They can be used to create a fast growing informal hedge
  • Can be used with other natives to form a native hedgerow
  • Suited to a sunny spot on most soil types
  • Attractive flower makes these a good garden plant
  • Good for attracting wild life into the garden

Wild Rose - Planting Instructions

Sowing Time

  • Bare root shrubs are planted from October to March
  • Avoid frosty conditions

Trench Preparation

  • Prepare hole / trench approx. 2ft wide & 2ft deep
  • Add farm yard manure to base of the trench / hole
  • Lightly cover the manure with a layer of soil

Positioning Plants

  • For hedging, space plants 30 - 60cm apart
  • When planting - hold plants at ground level & back fill the top soil
  • Ensure each plant is straight & soil is compacted in around it's root ball
  • Level off the soil around the plants

Handling the Plants

  • Be sure to water both before & after planting
  • When plants arrive, plant them straight away
  • If you are unable to plant straight away - then 'heel them in' temporarily
  • Keep plant's roots in their bag & avoid exposure to sun light
  • Take care not to damage roots, bark & buds

After Care

  • Water bare roots plants regularly until plants establish
  • Water before & after planting
  • If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
  • Weeding is also essential - especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young hedge
  • A new hedge will need to be weeded at least 3 time over the growing season
    • Weed in March, June & September
    • We recommend using weed membrane & mulch to control weeds

Pruning

  • Prune back in in late Summer, once flowers have faded
  • Prune all stems back by 1/3
  • Every few years cut back old growth - this will encourage new, healthy stems
  • Continue to deadhead flowers & prevent hips developing
    • This will encourage new flowers & save plant's energy
  • By late Summer allow hips to develop
    • This provides food for wild birds over Winter

Wild Rose - Quick Facts

  • The rose family is the most common garden plant family
    • It includes many common varieties including sorbus
  • 'Rugosa' means rugged or corrugated, referring to the rough foliage of the wild rose
  • Originating in Asia, the wild rose is sometimes considered an invasive plant but not so in Ireland
