Cooking Apple Tree - Characteristics

  • Produces large sour apples
  • Sweeter than most other cooking apples
  • Mature size: 2.5m tall & 3m wide, with a tall arching habit
  • Deciduous tree - they loose their leaves in Winter
  • Foliage - Ovate in shape, green in Summer turning red & maroon in Autumn
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Flower - Spring flowering with pinky white blooms, approx. 3cm in diameter
  • Fruits - Apples develop in late Summer

Cooking Apple Tree - Uses

  • Used in desserts & cider production
  • Used to pollinate eating apples
  • Add one to every orchard to ensure fruit develops after flowering

Cooking Apple Tree - Planting Instructions

Planting Time

  • Plant the moment they arrive
  • Bareroot apple trees can only be planted in the dormant season
  • Avoid frosty conditions, where the ground is frozen

Positioning Trees

  • Apple trees require full sun
  • Avoid shaded locations
  • Avoid frost pockets & exposed sites
  • South east facing slope is most ideal - avoid north facing slopes
  • Fill planting hole with manure prior to planting
  • When planting - hold plants at ground level & back fill the top soil
  • Ensure each plant is straight & soil is compacted in around it's root ball
  • Level off the soil around the plants

Orchard Planting

  • Align trees along the north - south axis
  • Spacing will depend on rootstock (M9 rootstock = 2.5m - 3m apart)
  • Stake trees prior to planting

After Care

  • Water bare roots plants regularly until established
  • Water before & after planting
  • If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
  • Weeding is also essential - especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young tree
I purchased 3 trees, a shrub and some tree stakes and ties and had a great experience once again. The trees were much stronger and even bigger than I expected and delivery was really fast. Great value for money and great quality. Definitely recommend.
