Crocosmia Bulbs - Note

  • Crocosmia bulbs are in fact corms and not bulbs

Corms & Bulbs

  • Corms
    • These are modified stems (that store food) with a basal plate
    • They have a pointed top which can have one or more growing points
    • Examples of corms include Crocus, Gladioli & Freesia
  • Bulbs
    • Bulbs are made up of scales, which eventually become the foliage & flowers
    • The scales are modified stems that store food
    • They have a dry outer layer (tunic)
    • Examples of bulbs include Onions, Lilies, Tulips, Daffodils & Hyacinths etc
