Apple Tree - Planting Instructions
Planting Time
- Plant as soon as the plants arrive
- Plant in dormant season (October to March)
- Avoid freezing conditions, where the ground is frozen
Positioning Trees
- Plant in full sun
- Avoid shaded, exposed areas & frost pockets
- South east facing slope is most ideal - avoid north facing slopes
- Add well rotted manure to planting hole
- When planting - spread out roots, ensure the top of the root collar is just at or below ground level
- Compact soil in around the root ball
Orchard Planting
- Plan your orchard along a north - south axis
- This avoids shading & maximises sunlight to plants
- Rootstock will determine spacing (M9 rootstock = 2.5m - 3m apart)
- Stake trees prior to planting
After Care
- Water bare root plants regularly until plants establish
- Water before & after planting
- If dry weather persists, water every 2 days
- Weeding is also essential - especially bind weed which can quickly smoother a young tree
- After 2 years, check the tree stakes to ensure they are not too tight around the tree
